The Colours of South Korea

In 1953, South Korea was one of the poorest countries on Earth, poorer than most of Africa, flattened by war. Within one lifetime, one, it became a top-ten economy, a chipmaking superpower and the culture factory of the 21st century. Historians call it the Miracle on the Han River. Koreans call it Tuesday. No country has ever climbed faster.

Where it all began

The deep story is long and proud: kingdoms like Silla with its golden crowns and the observatory at Gyeongju (7th century, the oldest surviving in Asia), Buddhist temples folded into mountains, and the Joseon dynasty, which ran the country for 500 years, one of the longest-ruling houses anywhere. In 1443, King Sejong did something no monarch had done: he invented an alphabet for his people. Hangul is so logically designed that linguists openly call it the most scientific script in use, and Korea celebrates it with a national holiday. Colonisation and war split the peninsula in the 20th century; the South answered with democracy, achieved through its own street protests in 1987, and that miracle economy.

The minds

Korea was first to movable metal type printing, the Jikji, printed in 1377, beats Gutenberg by 78 years, UNESCO certifies it. Admiral Yi Sun-sin's armoured turtle ships defeated invasion fleets in the 1590s and are studied in naval academies still. Today the minds trend global: director Bong Joon-ho's Parasite took the 2020 Best Picture Oscar, the first non-English film ever to win it; Han Kang took the 2024 Nobel in Literature; Squid Game became the most-watched series in Netflix history; and BTS and Blackpink turned K-pop into a planetary language. Culture is Korea's second semiconductor.

Made in Korea

Check the room you're in. The phone or TV is plausibly Samsung or LG; the car outside may be Hyundai or Kia; the memory chips running all of it are disproportionately Korean, Samsung is the world's memory-chip giant. Korean shipyards build a huge share of the world's large vessels. Add K-beauty skincare conquering bathroom shelves worldwide, instant ramyeon empires, and the Incheon airport that keeps winning best-in-world awards like it's collecting stamps.

Where to go

Seoul, a city of 600-year-old palaces with a subway from the future: Gyeongbokgung at changing of the guard, hanok alleys of Bukchon, Gwangjang market for bindaetteok straight off the griddle, and Hongdae at midnight for the energy of ten cities. Busan for beaches, the Gamcheon colour-block village and the world's largest department store next to a fish market that predates the word retail.

Then deeper. Gyeongju, the museum without walls, royal burial mounds like green hills in the city. Jeonju's hanok village, birthplace of bibimbap, eat accordingly. Jeju island, a volcanic UNESCO wonder where the haenyeo, free-diving women in their 60s, 70s and 80s, still harvest the sea, that tradition is UNESCO-listed too. Temple-stay a night in the mountains: 3 a.m. bells, tea with a monk, silence that works better than any spa. And the DMZ, the world's strangest border, where history is still standing at the fence.

Culture, on a plate and in the ear

Korean barbecue is participatory theatre: you grill, you wrap, you argue over the last piece of samgyeopsal. Kimchi comes with everything, there are hundreds of kinds, and making it together in November, kimjang, is UNESCO heritage. Fried chicken and beer, chimaek, is a national institution; soju toasts follow rules, pour for others, never yourself. Then noraebang: private karaoke rooms where dignity goes to die happily. And learn the concept that explains it all: jeong, the deep, sticky bond between people that turns strangers into family and one meal into a lifetime membership.
